Sensei Deen Daniels

Both the Hanover Park and Ruyterwacht dojo’s were opened by Sensei Deen Daniels a 3rd Dan Kyokushin karate black belt, who has been working in communities such as Hanover Park and Ruyterwacht since 1989. Sensei Deen grew up in Hanover Park known for its history of extreme gang violence and drug abuse. Sensei as he is now known to most, started karate at the age of 7 and as a youngster followed anyone who claimed to be a karate instructor. In 1983 Sensei Deen Daniels heard of the Oyama Surrey karate dojo in Surrey Estate about three kilometres from Hanover Park and with the blessing of his parents became a registered member of the club. He would run to this dojo four days a week, come sun, wind or rain. Even when gang fights took a turn for the worse and gang members started shooting each other and some times killing the innocent (none gang members), Sensei Deen continued to run as late as 21h00 at night from the Surrey dojo home. In 1987 sensei Deen reached his 1st Dan black belt! Today Sensei Deen is the proudest sensei as he is living his childhood dream, he is teaching Kyokushin karate and his students and clubs has grown from strength to strength. Sensei Deen and his students has achieved what many deemed to be impossible, they have since 2005 competed in 6 international full contact karate tournaments and one world karate tournament. 4 of these international events were held in Tokyo, Japan, 1 in Seychelles and 1 locally. This after the dojo’s were opened with the aim of keeping the children of these extremely volatile communities off the streets where they can so easily fall pray to the use of drugs or become gang members and to provide the youth with an alternative sport.
